Illamasqua Skin Base | Review and Demo

1My collection of Skin Base

What they say:
Inspired by the cult Asian market Beauty Balm creams, Skin Base Foundation is a brand new, refined formula unlike anything on the UK market. Easily blendable, it effortlessly creates a perfect complexion, and like the entire Illamasqua foundation range, is undetectable in a professional HD environment. Suitable for all skin types, it smoothes, softens and conditions your skin whilst providing natural, buildable coverage.

What I say:
Illamasqua Skin Base is hands down my favourite foundation. It was developed by David Horne, former Head of Product Development for Illamasqua. It has a medium coverage but can be sheered down or built up, and looks flawless in person as well as on HD. I would say it is suitable for most skin types, however if you’re very dry or very oily it may not work so well for you. It’s also worth noting that if you have any dehydrated patches then the pigment in it can cling to those, so make sure your skin is prepped well.

Colour:
The colour range is incredible, ranging from pure white to very deep. Here are swatches of the shades I own.

The range features are number of different undertones (generally the .5’s are yellow based). The undertones of the whole range are as follows.
1: White
2: Pink
3: Yellow
3.5: Neutral
4: Yellow with Pink
4.5: Yellow
5: Yellow with Pink
5.5: Yellow
6: Neutral
6.5: Yellow
7: Pink
7.5: Golden/Yellow
8: Pink
8US: Golden/Yellow
8.5: Yellow
9: Orange/Yellow
10: Orange/Yellow
10US: Golden
10.5: Golden
11: Peach
11US: Golden
12: Olive/Neutral
AU: Golden shimmer
Amber: Orange
13: Deep Olive
14: Olive
15: Golden
16: Red
17: Deep Olive
18: Deep

For myself, I mix 1 and 7 as 7 is the perfect undertone for me, but it is too dark so the white lightens it to the correct shade.

Application:
I find the foundation best applied by buffing into the skin with a fluffy brush, or with a damp sponge. You can see me applying the foundation in my video here.

4Me barefaced (yikes!) but I wanted to show a true representation of how well the foundation covers

As you can see it covers pretty well, although I would still opt to add concealer in some places, particularly the under eye.

Wear:
Lasts all day for me. I do powder it though. If you powder then you can easily rebuff the foundation to touch up.

Price:
It’s £32, which is a premium price, however it’s a truly premium foundation and worth the price tag. Also if you’re a makeup student or pro Illamasqua offer a discount scheme that you can sign up for. I believe that there is also a customer loyalty discount for 10% after your first 3 orders. Skin Base is available online on their website here or at free standing stores and counters.

All products in this post were bought by myself.
